Non Trucking Liability for Commercial Trucking Businesses

Non-trucking liability (NTL) insurance is a liability policy for commercial trucking owner-operators that covers accidents occurring when the truck is used for personal, non-business purposes, like driving to the grocery store. It protects against claims for bodily injury and property damage to others, providing coverage when the motor carrier’s primary liability policy is not active. NTL is often required by motor carrier lease agreements and does not cover the truck’s physical damage.

What is covers:

Bodily Injury: Pays for medical expenses of another person in you are at-fault in a collision.

Property Damage: Covers damage you cause to someone’s property, such as their vehicle.

Personal Use: Provides protection when the truck is being used for personal errands, commuting, or other activities outside of business operations.

What it does NOT cover:

Business Use: NTL does not cover any accidents while the truck is under dispatch or being used for any revenue generating purpose.

Physical Damage: NTL does not cover damage to the insured’s truck itself. This is a separate physical damage insurance policy.

Other Coverages: Typically does not include coverage for uninsured / underinsured motorists, or medical payments for yourself.
